When Love Is Hard To Do

There is nothing like a love relationship with a man to bring out the best in a woman and in case you haven’t noticed… also the worst. Men challenge us, don’t they? Have you ever stopped to ask yourself, “What was God thinking when He put us together?”

Hmmm let’s see… create them male and female. Design each sex so they are physiologically and emotionally polar opposites. Stick them together with no training in a marriage where there is every opportunity for offense. Have them share EVERYTHING—bedroom, bathroom, child-rearing, bank accounts, inlaws, outlaws.

Oh, and because we don’t have enough kindling for the fire yet… both are selfish sinners so when they don’t see eye to eye (which is ALOT) their knee jerk reaction is, “It’s-all-about-me.”

Talk about standing ankle deep in kerosene and striking matches!

Did I mention the bulls-eye on this marriage target is to exemplify the love between Christ and His bride the church before a watching world? With the deck stacked against us how are we supposed to make this thing called love work?

The truth is you can’t. At least not within yourself. “Love is from God” (1 John 4:7). So the only hope you and I have for finishing strong is to remember these saving words, “Apart from me,” Jesus says, “you can do nothing.” (John 15:5b). In my experience, no truer words have ever been spoken.

Let’s face it, left alone the chances of you and me sinking our own Love Boats are pretty high. So in those moments when you really want to bail, go for the life raft and trust the work God is doing in you and your man. Lean on Jesus for the strength to return to your love. Our Lord “is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us.” (Ephesians 3:20).

Stay lovely,
